He was likely fired for violating co policy related to employee safety. Kroger doesn't want it's employees risking their safety over merch...not worth it.
This is not an indication that the law is on the shoplifters side.
This . Yet they all blame lawyers for sensible company policy.
Instead of criticizing Krogers(& every corporation) smart policy they blame the 'system'.
Not only have those on the Right been indoctrinated to believe in tax breaks/subsidies for Corporations/Billionaires they also believe it is okay to risk their lives for them. Despite the Company's best efforts to dissuade them from doing so because the small cost of Shrinkage is not worth it.

Shrinkage is a part of all huge corporations & is figured into accounting. 1) Employee Theft is about 50% of it ,then 2)shoplifting,3) damage, 4)clerical/pricing errors ,etc....
Pretty much everything is figured into accounting for a publically traded company

The reason you justify theft goes to your lack of character and morals. You lefties are weak and pathetic.

Hey ... what can I say? I just don't like thieves.
Heck ... didn't even know it was 5,000 ... I would have tried to do better ... perhaps wished death upon theives' families, friends, and pets, too.
I've been catching up on a lot of old Game of Thrones episodes ... perhaps it's those damn Lannisters ... or frustration that Khal Drogo got to have Khaleesi ... and I don't.

Most people with good sense don't. However, there are those out there that think it's justified if the person being stolen from can afford it.
Porn for 10,000 would be nice - or another righteous rant.

You're paid to do what your boss wants. If you don't do that you get fired.

yeah this is just obeying company policy. If he had gotten stabbed and Krogers made him confront costumers Krogers is on the line big time.

1,000,000 candy bars isn't worth the damage that 1 yahoo employee can cause. I'm not just implying lawsuits- this guy could've easily gotten stabbed and bled out and had a killer in the streets desperate to get away... trying to earn $8 an hour and to save $5 that was already written off.
Stand up when needed, but pick your battles smarter than that.

Where do you draw the line?
If thieves come into your yard and want to get away with a wheelbarrow that you didn't want anyway ... you just gonna stand by and let them take it?
I swear ... country is filled with people with no principles and no balls.

Why ask hypotheticals? The guy did what his company said not to do.
Yes it sucks for him, but companies expect their policies to be followed.

Because what the guy did was so damn foolish that they cannot reasonably defend it so they come up with silly hypotheticals
Even Kroger & other corporations think it foolish to risk your life/safety (& others) for them over a few bucks. Let them hire security if shoplifting is such a major issue(employees steal far more than shoplifters).
They have been so indoctrinated to defend corporations on the Right(subsidies/tax breaks) that they are even willing to give their lives for them.

I guess I meant shrinkage is already figured into 'overhead'.
An unimportant topic overall, but the mindset to defend a billion dollar corporation with your life is insane. Even corporations think it's insane for a $10-15 dollar per hour employee to risk their lives(& others) for some trinkets written off as a part of doing business( behind employee theft).
I just find it fascinating.

This. I'm sure in his orientation he signed papers that went over this. I know I did when I was hired. When I give a new employee an orientation I make sure to go over this with them every time. It really isn't worth it to try and stop someone anyways.

Show me again where it says the store manager is a Republican

I'm really sort of surprised at this thread.
One doesn't need to approve of theft to understand why stores have these policies. Clearly, the stores have calculated that the policy in place is less harmful to their bottom line than whatever theft is happening.
And, of course, everyone who has ever worked in retail can tell you, most of the shite walking out the door is walking out with employees.

When I worked retail, they could kiss my arse if they wanted me to confront a thief for minimum wage.

I'm willing to bet this guy will get picked up by a small business owner with potential. When stories breaks like this there's some businesses that would rather have someone with guts and integrity instead of some liberal pansy-arse.
