re: Braves fans: Would getting a leadoff hitter help this team tremendously?

YOu also need an ace of your own, but the Braves will have to make do.
Ervin Santana will fill that role quite nicely, considering he turned down multi-year contracts for a 1 year deal tells me all I need to know about his mindset...dude is determined and just wants the damn baseball

So your only solution is to either move Schafer/Simmons to leadoff or trade for Ichiro? That's very open-minded, but it's also not very smart.

Historically, he thrives at leadoff. This is really not debatable.
lol hahahahaha
historically? lol hahahahaha

Yes. Last year was part of history.
ETA: However, I don't know if it's so much him thriving at leadoff or the team thriving when he's leading off.

The Braves' lineup was off the charts good last year when JHey lead off.

No.

Never even mentioned that.

What's above makes this not very smart.
Apparently some of you really suck at reading.

Your sample size is like 30 games from last year, so far this year he hasn't been that good batting leadoff outside of 2 or 3 games. I don't get all of these declarations based on small sample sizes.

I realize you didn't mention Ichiro, but you did mention moving Simmons or Schafer to leadoff. Your other solution was trading for Altuve, but he's a second baseman and we already have a second baseman in AAA with a high OBP.

So 30 games is too small a sample size but 13 games played this year is a good sample size for proving JHey is not a good leadoff option for the Braves?
Sweet.
Sweet.

No, my contention is that he is a middle of the lineup bat...people started tossing out terms like "historically" to back their claims of Heyward as the GOAT leadoff hitter, and I was pointing out that the historical stats are only 30 games large from last season, and 13 games from this season.

Anyway, in other news....

I highly doubt there's not a coincidence of putting a strong OBP guy in the lead off spot last season (JHey) and the team scoring more runs.
Small sample size yes, but that's just basic concepts of putting together the most effective lineup.

One person. Me. One person. But there's a much bigger sampling size in the middle of the order, and it's less than great. He was put in the leadoff spot because we ran out of options. It has worked, and there are still no other options. Why change until it stops making sense?

I think BJ is better than Ichiro as long as he can get back to being close to his career averages
I agree, but that's a big arse IF.
If it's trade deadline time adn BJ is still floundering like last year (hitting below .200 or slightly above it) it's time to probably make a trade for another bat. Just my opinion.

Very possible. IF he can pitch anywhere close to how he pitched last year and Heyward just happens to be on his hot streak instead of his retard streak at the plate during the playoffs, the Braves could easily make a deep run.

Let me break it down further since you love to argue with people on here, I'm taking a page from my boy white lobsters book:
Jason Heyward has played a total of 47 games in the leadoff position.
His first 21 games he went 23-80 for a .287 avg and scored 28 runs with 0 SB, not bad...this is when the braves went on that 12 game winning streak and all was right with the world
His last 26 games he has gone 18-95 for a .189 avg, scored 15 runs and had 4 SB
Overall he is batting .234 out of the leadoff spot, this includes 4 playoff games. He walked a total of 21 times versus striking out 35 times while batting leadoff.

It was. But it is also an extremely small sample size.
If you want JHey to be a leadoff hitter for this team in the long term (next 3 years), I'm almost fine with it because it means he won't be able to command near as much money hitting .260 with 15-20 HRS than if he could bat 2nd/3rd and have more RBIs and HRS.

Well I'm glad you finally have your facts in order. That's great that we have someone on the farm... and hopefully he can be an option as well. I'm very open minded about coming to a solution and maximizing our production. It's wise to explore all avenues and not being closed off to just one. Why? Because that's the smart thing to do.
Posted on 4/15/14 at 12:38 pm to LSUsmartass
What was his OBP during that time?
