I think there's a part of he human brain that craves impending disaster. I'd reckon it's evolutionary. If you felt impending doom, you, prepared, you survived. Now we have a strong propensity to live in constant fear of our impending (self-caused) doom

One thing I've often wondered is: if we were all afraid our computers would stop working on 1/1/2000, why didn't someone set their computers ahead to that time beforehand to see if it happened?
You know, perform a backup, turn the clock ahead, wait and see what happened...coulda saved folks lots of senseless worry...
