Completely made up story. Chomsky discusses this sort of media fabrication in Manufacturing Consent.

"Becoming"?

When a friend of mine was in the Navy back in the 80's, he told me that sometimes when they were refueling their frigate (USS Boone?) a Russian warship would sail between the frigate and their tanker. they would have to drill on recovering fuel lines as quickly as possible for these events.

This kind of shite ain't new.

No it's really not.

We play games with non allied navies all the time.

Hell the game got hot a couple years ago when a Chinese plane accidentally rammed a US Patrol plane a couple of years ago.

Opps

This has always been the game and will continue to be.

The OP, like the media, will try to make a bigger deal out of it then it actually is.

yes...during war game excercises. a random buzzing of a navy ship by a Russian fighter is not common....not even a little bit. not since the 80's anyway

Yup. Part of the game we use to play.

Hell I remember a story of a pair of destroyers unrep (under way replenishing) from a tanker and a Russian warship made a run at them. The Captain of the destroyer ordered his guns to track the Russian warship. The Russian warship turned away.

You couldn't be more wrong. We launch fighters to guide them away from our combat groups. But this sort of thing is common practice, and as a former submariner you well know this.

lol, well digital killed the need for photo mates. They combined the rate with JOs and I think they now call them "mass comm" specialists.

I spent my time in a photo lab on a carrier, up in CVIC and time on the deck. I didn't end up being a TARPs monkey but I developed plenty film back in the day.

Good times. It was back before the Navy became all PC. I'd hate to be in now.

Well, who knows, I have a couple of friends who ended up becoming lifers, we talk from time-to-time and they have shared more then a few sea stories.

well as a submariner your kind of out of the loop. unless we were doing war game exercises we rarely traveled with our group, so who knows. submarine crews are usually kept in the dark for obvious reasons.

most of our close calls (although very rare) were with North Korea

Yeah no doubt. I could not imagine the isolation of being a submarine. You guys have gigantic fricking balls to do that for a living. I gotta see the sun once in a while or I go batshit crazy.
