The other thing to consider is in the 9th inning you're usually sending up 8,9,1 or 9,1,2

Huh? Is there actually any statistical evidence supporting this?

Phillips had two OBP monsters in front of him last year. Choo and Votto both finished in the top 4 in OBP in baseball.

I think you can make a strong argument your team will score more runs hitting him second to maximize his at-bats. I think the difference is likely pretty marginal and as long as he is in the top 3, you should be fine though.

IMO, If you had 2 guys with a .320-.330 OBP and 1 guy with a .365 OBP hitting in front of your best hitter who hits .330 with 31 HRS, you would score a lot more runs than if you had 2 .320-.330 OBP guys and 1 .390 OBP guy hitting in front of a batter who hits .280 with 30 HRs.

the goal isn't to maximize individual players' RsBI, it's to maximize the team's total runs scored

which is why trout batting second with a .435 obp and 85 RsBI and pujols third with a .360 obp and 115 RsBI is better than kole calhoun batting second with 70 RsBI and trout third with 125 RsBI

I don't know about the best hitter, but you definitely want someone that hits behind the runner. Whether that's a lefty or someone that goes backside a lot is up to the coach. Especially with the new bats, you must move runners and steal a couple runs every game.

They point to a player getting 18 more plate appearances, but that advantage is actually negligible if he takes 2 days off, which is less than most players take off.

That player sure gets to the plate a lot each game!

Barbe high school many times bats their best hitter leadoff.

In high school your best hitter can hit leadoff if you have some decent hitters behind him. Maximize his plate appearances.

A big factor is who your options are to hit second and third. Last year on the Reds, I thought it would have been fine to hit Choo second and Votto third, since they were both so effective. However, I might reconsider hitting Votto third if Zach fricking Cozart is hitting before Votto.
