I took it to mean that in the Viking world if you kill the leader you become the leader.
I did a little digging and I'm not sure Lagertha would be allowed to command an army, at least not long term. It sounds like Priestess roles were as far as Viking women got in the political structure, although they were allowed to inherit and run their husbands estates when they died if no son was available, so as long as she keeps paying the bills I suppose her dead husband's men would have no reason to not follow her.

You must have missed the part where she killed him.
Unless the scene where she killed him was a flashback, she took warriors to help Ragnar against Jarl Borg before then.

Upon returning to Norway, she quarreled with her husband, and slew him with a spearhead she concealed in her gown. Saxo concludes that she then "usurped the whole of his name and sovereignty; for this most presumptuous dame thought it pleasanter to rule without her husband than to share the throne with him".

It takes no digging for me to say that I'd follow those warlocks anywhere.

Then you also missed the scene where she asked to go help fight Jarl Borg.
Are you sure you're watching Vikings?

It's sounding like you are confused or missed an episode, so sorry if this is spoilers.
Lagertha took men in secret to help Ragnar fight jarl Borg and retake their village.
Lagertha leaves Bjorn with Ragnar and returns to her husband.
Husband is displeased both that she helped in secret and that she didn't bring Bjorn back.
Husband tries to put her in her place via sexual assault at dinner in front of everyone and she stabs him in the eye and he is decapitated by one of his own men who then nods approvingly at Lagertha.
Lagertha responds to Ragnar's call for raiding partners with her dead husband's men and ships by pretending to be some jarl no one's ever heard of, meets him in the forest to reveal herself as said jarl and Ragnar accepts her as a raiding partner.

She didn't kill him.

You're right, that was an important detail to get wrong. Lagertha stabs husband in eye, head chopped off by one of his men.

Yeah, when I saw the legs I figured that wouldn't go over well.
