In my native contry Venezuela it is about 25 cents a gallon.
But toilet paper and other commodies are expensive and hard to find these days.
I typical smart phone costs about 3 times as much if you can find one.

Price of gas is based purely on the market, not on *production costs.

It is being blamed on the change over from winter to summer gas.
I'd argue that it has more to do with the Ukranian/Russia situation. Events like this raise uncertainty about future supply availabilities of crude in the global market. Increased uncertainty increases precautionary demand which increases price; and things are very uncertain right now.
Lutz Killian had a decent paper on this a few years back, that somehow got picked up by AER, called something like "Not all oil price shocks are alike". I don't like his last set of regressions, but his breakdown of various contributions to the evolution of oil prices is very revealing. And very relevant to the currently unstable state of world politics.
On that note, I'd venture that if you went check out oil trading patterns on NYMEX that you would find a large increase in the price and quantity of puts since escalation in Ukraine. Refiners are going to want to protect themselves from the possibility of a massive supply cutoff, so they purchase future options at higher than current prices, thereby driving current prices up.

Louisiana Motor Fuel Excise tax is 20 cents a gallon.

People who complain about gas prices annoy the shite out of me.
In 2008, we saw gas prices hit $4 in 2008. While they declined quite a bit, they ramped back up to $4 in 2011.
So the thing is, its readily apparent, we need to come to grips with $3-4 gas. If you haven't changed your life to deal with this and it matters to you, you are a fricking idiot.
Get rid of the truck, get a hybrid, take the bus, move. There are a lot of ways to reduce your gas costs. have you done any of these or do you sit there and just bitch?

It is pretty crazy. A gallon of gas used to be a good bit cheaper than a gallon of milk.
But I guess they can extract large amounts of oil at a time whereas for milk they have to hook cows up to machines to suck on their tits for a while. Takes a lot longer.

I don't think he was complaining about the price of gas as much as he was hinting on the fact the Democrats went out in full force demanding something be done and that it was all Bushes fault. Fast FOWARD till today and the prices are even higher that it was when they were making a big deal about it and not a peep from the hill

gas prices have been over $3 for so long that it doesn't even piss me off when it goes up 10cents or so. Now a 20 cent jump gets my attention. The other day I had enough points build up on my kroger card that I bought for $2.98.

As others have said, lifting the crude oil out of the ground, refining it, blending the gas up(gas just isn't gas typically, different grades for different parts of the country), putting it in the pipeline, vessel or barge for delivery to a loading rack, then into the truck to deliver it to the station, add in your bullshite ethanol and mandatory detergent additive and 3.50 a gallon is pretty cheap.

I'd say $3.50 is just about right after you add taxes. If it cost more to do all you mentioned, gas would be more expensive.
