i would wait for the new model to come out. big overhaul coming. it'll be called the golf variant or just sportwagen (instead of the misnomer "Jetta")
I may not be able to wait that long. When do the 2015 models usually come out?
I just want a car that could potentially last me 20 years and that works well with a family and roadtrips/commuting the work.
I'd never really looked into diesel. It always seems like there is a stigma against them in the US. Now that I've researched them more, I may go test drive one of the wagons.

I've seen all sorts of different predictions for the sportwagen. could be early summer. could be end of 2014.

Diesel engines last double what gasoline engines do. And with the price difference between gas and diesel being only 20-40 cents a gallon, it makes the diesel a great buy. I am looking at the Passat Diesel myself and it would actually cost me less per mile for fuel with the diesel versus gasoline. Plus diesel engines can take a lot more abuse than gas ones.

Wife has a jetta TDI. Do not expect for almost any car made today to last 20 years. The engine and drive train might, but all the plastic crap they put in cars these days is not built to last. We love the fuel milage and her car is pretty nice for the price, but I don't plan on it lasting in our houshold for more than 7 years total. It's 2 years old and has some pretty annoying rattles.
