The markup on wine is ridiculous, usually 4 to 5 times store price

Well, if you can't afford it, maybe you can just skip drinking wine in the restaurant.

Is this the part where I say of course I can?

Seriously though, I've bought many many bottles from restaurants over the years, probably back when I shouldn't have been spending that much on dinner. I just know what I like wine wise at this point and would rather not roll the dice if the restaurant allows it. I also only eat at restaurants where I'd bring a bottle maybe 6 times a year at most, so usually I'm drinking whatever a restaurant is serving.

Yeah, I understand that a lot more restaurants are cool with people bringing in wine than in the past.

It's all good.

Actually in most cases you have three options: drink something on the list, don't, or bring your own. If restaurants had a problem with you bringing your own wine, they simply wouldn't allow it, and some don't. The idea that it's some kind of breach of social etiquette is absurd.

That positions you well to receive my snot rocket.

I don't have any wine that's worthy of bringing to a restaurant, but I could see doing it with a nice bottle of beer, especially considering a lot of places have bullshite beer selections.

It really needs to be something a notch above their wine list with price or personal nature for you and wifey.

Why don't the restaurants stipulate this if it "needs" to be this way?

Can we all agree that a super good tip is in order when you bring your own bottle in? That's where we might can separate the good from the bad guys.

Tip like you bought the wine there. Same as if you used a gift card, imo.

I cant believe there are that many people that think its not acceptable to bring wine to a restaurant. Pretty common at fine dining establishments. All of the caveats mentioned earlier are good.

They charge a corkage fee, the restaurant still makes money because they don't sell inventory on that bottle.

I definitely tip extra when I bring my own bottle. The last time the guy forgot to change me the corkage fee, and I tipped him the fee and what I would have tipped. Wanted to make sure he didn't have to come out of pocket if it got noticed later.

What is the usual corkage fee?

I've seen everything from zero to $30. $15-$20 is the most common, in my experience.

All of the Besh restaurants have no corkage fees. Amazing, given that they have very good wine lists, especially at Domenica.
