That's probably what he meant. I doubt he thinks that individual policemen make money from pot being illegal. If he does, he is an idiot, though.

I meant that the jails are making money, not the cops. I was using "cops" in a general sense; law enforcement benefits from having warm bodies in jail. I think it was the Times-Picayune that did a good series about the amount of money being made from this and how LA's #1 incarceration rate is bringing in the big bucks. The money, along with the uber conservative mindset of much of the state, wants to keep the penalties high for weed. Like others have said, the younger generation of conservatives seems to lean libertarian. I'd include myself in that number.
