So calling it one of the greatest plays ever = Meh?
It was a heave downfield and a jump ball that had a great ending. It wasn't a great pass or anything like that though. Clayton was the hero of that play IMO

Pistol Pete - around his back and between his legs in 1970.

Pretty cool that on Les Miles' first 4th down in his career at lsu he calls in a fake punt next to their own goal line

He didn't call it per se, but gave Chris Jackson free reign to audible to the pass should he recognize the gunner was uncovered. In other words, it wasn't discussed as a set play before they lined up for the punt.

Perrilloux in 2007 SEC Championship. 35 yd laser TD pass to Bryd, fit it between Hefney and Eric Berry.

JLee 2nd half vs. Auburn in 08
he made some great throws during the 2nd half, oh for what could have been...

Tangent, if LSU is ever in this situation I hope they just interfere with the pass until time expires, then make the stop on the last play because that is the right call.
Also one of my favorites. I'm in that video

Literally got goose bumps on every video. D Byrd in 2007 did it for me

How young are the people on this board?
The first two that came to my mind were:
Hodson to Fuller to beat Auburn in the Earthquake game in '88.
Bert Jones to Brad Davis in '72 to beat Ole Miss.
To all the kids out there - LSU actually played football before the turn of the century.

He was wide open in the back of the endzone. It wasn't really an incredible pass except for the moment

That's why it's an incredible pass.

Hard to go against that JR 4th down throw against Ariz St
Great pass....but Flynn/Byrd against Aubie was more significant....big SEC rival and all.

ETA: Jamarcus vs. ASU was probably the most impressive..
Great pass. It's gotta be up there.

I was waiting for this comment from an old timer. Sorry to be the one to break it to you, but a majority of everything great in LSU football history happened within the last 20 years.
The passes you mentioned, while great, are not as great as Mauck to Green or Flynn to Byrd..
You have to take into account how meaningful the passes were. The two you mentioned occured in good seasons that ended with bowl losses. If the two passes I mentioned fall incomplete, there is a good chance our trophy case is short a few Crystal footballs.

Ro to Robert Royal to win the Tenn 00 game in OT. ONIONS!
This was my thought, or any number of the passes big Ro threw @ Gumps 01, vs Illini Sugar B that year.
Met to Juice TD 12 Hogs, Met to everyone @ UGA 13, JJ & JL each had a beauty 11 vs either AU or UF. The pass JL to Early? @ WV he dropped in EZ.
Side note; the 59 OM Billy Cannon game, was there a pass attempted this game? LOL any oldtimers?

My favorite and probably most recent was Mettenberger's 3rd and 23 pass to Beckham for the 1st down at UGA

The question is greatest...not hardest or most dificult. There are probably some really hard throws on 1st down in meaningless games, but who cares.

Actually, the question that I asked was best.
There are plenty of throws that happened in meaningful situations that had a high degree of difficulty.
The quality and difficulty of the throw is certainly an aspect.
I wouldn't consider the game winners that JR made against Ole Miss or Tenn to be in the same category.

Jamarcus vs Ole Miss at home towards the end of the game was incredible and kept LSU in the game.
