Another telling stat that reflects very poorly either on Newton or the receivers is the horrible catch percentages.
Olsen- 67%
Smith- 59%
Lafell- 56%
Ginn- 53%
WRs and TEs total- 60%
WRs total- 57%
TEs total- 67%
HBs total- 79%
Being that the backs have much higher percents tells me Cam has huge accuracy issues. Having worse receivers is only going to highlight that more.

How do the Saints compare?
Posted on 4/2/14 at 10:48 pm to Hoodoo Man
I'll check. Back in a few.
Graham- 60%
Colston- 68%
Stills- 63%
Sproles- 80%
Thomas- 92%
Moore- 69%
Meachem- 53%
Watson- 63%
Ingram- 64%
Toon- 33%
Collins- 78%
Hill- 60%
Cadet- 100%
WRs and TEs- 62%
WRs- 64% 14.8 ypc
TEs- 60%, 13.4 ypc
RBs- 84% 7.3 ypc
Temper the numbers after Watson as everyone under him has less than 19 targets. Cadet was only 2 for 2. Collins was pretty legit at 14 for 18. Toon was 4 for 12.
You can tell who had more deep balls though as the percents for those guys tended to be lower(Graham, Stills, and Meachem).
But fricking PT going 77 for 84.
I'll add in the combined percents with an edit.

another thing that is going to suck for them is that Newton is having ankle surgery and won't be able to get acquainted with his new WR's during OTA's.
I mean as far as getting the timing down with them and what not.
he'll be ready for training camp apparently but you'd like to have more time if your the Panthers.

When you look at other backs, (in Dr. Evil voice)80% is pretty standard really. The number of catches is what we have to replace.
And with Toon, it was only 12 targets so not a good gauge.
Between Stills and a hopefully healthy Morgan, that could give teams fits.
And remember all of these numbers are catches/targets. So the numbers are not a direct reflection of the receivers.
Throws into tight coverage that are tipped, ints, off target throws, and drops all go into the misses so a lot of the numbers are on the QB unless the receiver had a high number of drops.
Edit:
Also, with such a higher % to backs, why not always throw it to them right? I added the ypc to show why. It's about double to TEs and WRs than to backs.

Throwing some more numbers for some perspective.
Brees completed 68.5% of his passes. He had 83 deflected(12.7%; pretty high) and 12 picked(1.8%). That combines for 14.5% of his passes.
So add that together(83%) and there was 17% of passes not caught or touched by a defender. We had 15 drops which account for 2% of the passes.
That leaves 15% of passes that were off target or thrown away, unless sacks are counted in attempts(not sure on this). If they are, then those accounted for 5.5%, leaving 9.5% off target or thrown away.
I think the biggest take away from these numbers is that Brees will force throws into tight windows and defenders do get their hands on the ball.
Edit:
In case you were curious Graham(97% catchable rate) had 3 drops, Thomas(97%), Moore(95%), Stills(94%), and Toon(67%) each had 2, and Colston(99%), Collins(93%), Ingram(88%), and Hill(86%) each had 1.
Meachem and Watson each had 30 targets and zero drops, so they have 100% catch rates for catchable balls. Sproles also had no dropped passes.
Edit:
Back on Brees, if you switched our tipped passes on D(65) with the amount Drew had, he would have tied his career high in completion %(71.2%). Hopefully we get that cleaned up, keep the ints down, and he stays as accurate as ever.

I was genuinely pissed when he threw that pick against the Rams. He tried to force a ball to Jimmy in the endzone. He was double covered and a third DB peeled off his man to make the pick because Drew was going for Graham the whole time and never took his eyes off of him.
but shite happens sometimes.

#12 is one of my favorites. Not bad for a guy who seemed to piss people off on this board a lot this past season.

If you count the targets to the number of drops(drop rate) he had the lowest(0.9%) outside of the guys with no drops.
Sproles efficiency is the only one that compares as the other guys with no drops had way fewer targets(though 30 targets with 0 drops is pretty good).

No problem. I like looking at stuff like that, so I post it up in case others do too.
It helps give a good perspective on the team, and you can see with some of this stuff who is getting bashed for no good reason and who might be doing worse than you think.
Colston definitely did a lot better than people give him credit for and he was one of the few players that decided to show up against Seattle(though I imagine that was also part of Seattle's plan to let one guy beat them but not the others).
Same with PT. He's so underrated every year.
