Win win.

Are you fricking kidding me? Miggy gets almost 300 million and Trout, the best player in MLB, gets half that?
That. Is fricking funny.

He will be the first 400MM player. In 7 years, the way contracts are going, don't be surprised.

.144 billion. that's all?
Posted on 3/28/14 at 10:15 pm to WestlakeTiger
Trout has almost no control of his salary thru 2017. This is a fair deal for both sides.

6 years is better for trout than the 144 mil

Chances mlb will have a salary cap by the time this contract is over?
Also, how much of this is guaranteed? You see how much is guaranteed all the time in football, is all of it guaranteed in baseball? Like if he went down with a career ending injury tomorrow he still gets paid in full?

considering there was a thread on here where people said he would command 300mil, some said 500 lol
No one said that. We said he could get a half a billion IF HE WAS A FREE AGENT (I also threw in having Boras as an agent). Given the current system, I guessed 6/$150m as the final deal, but he signed a team friendly contract. Good on him. But he wasn't getting that much on ths deal because he had little leverage. We were guessing what he command as a free agent right now which, obviously, isn't the situation.

Here are the threads in which we discussed what he'd be worth on the open market.

Regardless, if we use Miggy as the 30 million annual baseline, then I do not think Trout is worth 50 million because we have to wait a few years for Trout to hit the open market. It is unfair to do the simulation when Trout is 22-32 instead of 26-36.

Well, that was the hypothetical. IF he was a free agent, what would he get? It's not meant to be fair, just fun.
But this is a good deal for both sides. Angels get a lower AAV than Trout probably wants, but he still gets only a 6 year deal and he'll be a free agent right smack in the middle of his prime. He'll still be a contender for biggest contract ever in six years if he keeps playing like this. The half billion is likely off of the table, but we'll see what contracts look like then.

Smartest move the Angels have made in about 5 years.

If he continues putting up the same numbers he has his first two years then when he turns 29 hell he will get paid even more then too

I don't think a hard cap is in the horizon for MLB, but 6 years is a long time.
As for the guarantee, as long as he doesn't retire he'll receive every penny of that contract.
For them people comparing his deal to Cabrerra's, sports contracts pay based on past performance, not future production. It seems counterintuitive, but that's really the way it works. Trout will probably get at least $200 mil on his next contract even if he tails off over the next 6 years and is just above average instead of great
Miggy is 2 time defending MVP and the only Triple Crown winner in 40 years. Trout's had two great seasons, but it's no where near what Miggy has done.
The biggest issue most execs have with what Detroit did, in my estimation, is give him that big of a deal when he still has two years left in his current contract. He's 30, lived a less than pristine lifestyle, and spent a significant part of last season hurt. His production could drop rapidly.

Yep. You don't get it...
Trout DIDN'T WANT a 10 year deal like Cabrera. He gets his 144 M for now and when he's 29(not the infamous 30 year mark) he'll get to sign another massive contract. It's a win for both sides in this deal
