Is this just a subtle brag about how smart one [think he or she] is, disguised as lighthearted self-deprecation?

I'm beginning to think it is.

I'm sure this has been discussed on here before, but I'm a huge nerd, so I was probably busy coding some apps or inventing something in my physics lab.

i say im a nerd because im 27 years old and still enjoy the hell out of video games and movies/tv.

being smart is secondary to all that.

I dont think someone who calls them-self a nerd is referencing how smart they are, but their interest and hobbies

Nerd is "cool" now. So if someone watches an episode of The Big Bang Theory and reads the first 3 chapters of The Hunger Games, he or she will make a facebook post about being such a nerd.

Most of the time when I see this it is said/posted on social media by some pretty hot/cute chick trying to get compliments. It's what girls do (fishing) so as to not come off as vain or self absorbed.

Also it gives you a disclaimer about liking non main stream things.

Essentially saying "there's no point in making fun of me, I'm well aware"

I often feel shameful for just how much I know about the Star Wars universe and would never display that knowledge proudly.

Nerd has more to do with interest than actual intelligence, but yeah "nerd" has become cool and everyone wants to be one. Part of the hipster movement

I don't associate nerdiness with intelligence. I think it has more to do with interest in sci-fi, video games, etc.

<---kinda nerdy

No, its not. I'm a nerd, and while I happen to be pretty smart, it has nothing to do with my nerdiness. My nerdiness comes from my interests and hobbies.

With that said, I'm also a redneck/gear head too, which doesnt normally go along with being a nerd but I can pull that kind of shite off like that.

Now THAT was a brag.

No bc I don't consider an intelligent person to be a nerd. I consider a nerd to be someone too into fantasy stuff. Like Pokemon and whatnot. Being intelligent is cool and was even when I was in HS. We never picked on those types who were awkward/intelligent.

I think it depends on what comes after "I'm a huge nerd."
If the sentence ends with "because I stayed up all night playing dungeons and dragons" then maybe it isn't such a brag.

Nerd is an ambiguous term. It doesn't necessarily mean that you're smart and your IQ is through the roof. It also means that you're really passionate about something that you do a lot. Like you're a video game nerd, or movie nerd.
