I bought my old man a M&P shield 9mm for Christmas. It's pretty awesome. Small enough to carry but big enough to feel like a full pistol. I like it a lot. No experience with Beretta 9mm.

M&P is very nice. Great gun. Can't get over the trigger but that can be remedied with an apex kit.
Walther PPQ is an excellent gun. My favorite striker fired gun. Great Trigger and ergo.
XD's/XDm are also very nice.
The Beretta I'm assuming you are referring to is the PX4. This is a da/sa type. Takes a little more learning to do but I prefer them over striker.
In DA/SA I would do...
CZ75 P07 Duty very nice with great ergo's.
FNX grip is aggressively textured but the overall feel of the gun is top notch
Sig Sp2022 very well made gun
