Saw Dave Matthews with my brother at The Boot in NOLA in 1992.

Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Storyville Music Hall in 1986. It was insane.
They played the day after I turned 18 in the Ball Room at the Student Union for free.

My cousin is Robert Earl Keen and when he plays here in Houston @ Rockerfeller we'll go back stage and say wut up.
My grandmother made the neck ties (bolo ties) for ZZ Top and were often at her house. We had dinner with Dusty quite a few times as a kid. They used to live nearby as well.
Before I was even a fetus, my mom worked at a hotel in Singapore and the Beatles would always ask her to join them after her shift. She went to their room on a few occasions with some other girls just to hang out - no hanky panky thankfully.....or so she claims. Sucks b/c my dad could've been Paul, Ringo or John. I hate you dad!

That was a little before my time, but I remember reading that the Ballroom at the Union got trashed during the show. People were ripping out seats, etc. They stopped booking bands after that.

amateur. i was at the LSU student union when they got thrown out for wearing nothing but socks in like 1984. they were very popular by 1986.
having said that, i caught these guys free at emo's in houston before they were famous
- smashing pumpkins
- nirvana
- mudhoney
- L7 ok they never became famous
- the melvins
- hole
emo's was a regular sub-pop staging area for a while.
i remember being super pissed off trying to shoot pool with smashing pumpkins on stage 10 feet away and those damn distored instruments. i had no idea they were going to be so famous one day.

Zac Brown played as a one man band at my brother's crawfish boil at his house in Atlanta in April 2004.
Not a "before they were famous" post, but first exposed to Zac Brown a few years ago when they opened for Kenny Chesney at Lambeau. Wasn't really a country fan at the time, but they got me more into it, and I listen to it quite a bit now.
Saw them earlier this summer at Summerfest and they put on a hell of a show, and going to see them this weekend at Wrigley.
Those guys are incredibly talented and great live. Do some great covers.

I watched Zac Brown Band perform in the upstairs loft of a downtown B'ham bar in front of a crowd of about 40 people about a year or two before they hit it big.

1990ish or so i saw all of these for free at Emo's in Houston
- Hole
- L7
- Nirvana
- MudHoney
- Melvins
- Smashing Pumpkins
The sad thing was, I didn't know who most were at the time..only that the noise from the damn stage was pissing me off trying to play pool 10 feet away.
melvins was nothing but loud drums.
i thought smashing pumpkins SUCKED

I can't imagine his voice live would be good, so not at all surprised by that one.
Guster played the student union Rathskellar when I was at UW. I guess that's kinda something.

I saw Stanton Moore playing drums for a random All State Jazz band show when he was still in high school. He was phenomenal even back then.

I also saw Guns & Roses open up for Motley Crue in November 1987 at he BJCC in Birmingham. Motley was on their Girls Girls Girls tour and was one of the biggest bands in the world. GnR on the other hand was just starting to get some publicity. I remember they came out and their stage "show" consisted of nothing but the most simple lights and a huge Guns & Roses banner behind them. They came out and put on one of the best shows I'd seen to that point or since.

My dad and his buddies saw george strait play in some honky tonk bar before he was famous. Mid way through the show my dads buddy walked out saying "this guy cant sing worth a shite and will never amount to anything"
