You're way off base on this IMO. It's not individual skills that have degraded in the higher levels of basketball.
The lost skills today are team skills. Teams don't run offenses like they used to, everything is isolation, pick and roll, or a quick hit set. It shows on defense as well, a lot of teams don't seem to be working together on defense as much as just individually guarding guys.
If there is a lost individual art in basketball today it's post moves
You are way off base. The offenses today are so much better than they were in the past. They are much more complex, much more efficient, and is a night and day difference from the 60's, 70's, 80's, etc.

And team defense today is much better than it was in the past. I was watching the 1968 NBA Finals the other day, and they played old-school man-to-man. And I don't use "old school" in a good way.

Man-to-man back then consisted of literally following your man around the court wherever he went like a puppy dog. There was no concept of team defense.

Now, you have players working together on the pick and roll, either switching, running ICE, hedging, etc. It's much more complicated today. You don't stick on your man, you sag towards the middle when the ball is on the other side. Helping and recovering, rotating, etc. Rotations are a big part of defense. Defenders didn't used to rotate like today back in the 70's.

Defense today is in another stratosphere compared to back then. Same with offense.

In your destruction of one myth, you created another. I agree with you on modern defense, but..

That's simply not true either. Teams did know how to switch or how to play a pick and roll. Or play zone... that's why they passed a rule against it. Team defense most certainly existed in older NBA games. it wasn't like team defense was invented in 2001.

GTFO team defense is better because:

a) team have become waaaaaaaaaaaay over reliant on the 3 point shot
b) one on one scoring has gone to absolute shite.

There are literally 3 guys who are elite 1 on 1 inside/out scorers in the NBA and they are Melo, Kobe and Durant. Compared to say 1985 Gervin, King, Bird, Worthy, Aguirre, Kiki, Dantley, Dominique and English.

One on one offense has greatly devolved. Watching a guy back down in the post today is like seeing a unicorn. Same with a leaners, hook shots, finger rolls, scoop shots. And the only thing thats been added is the floater.
