A booster is given at 4-6 years which has a 90+% chance of conferring complete immunity. All immunity wanes as you age though, which is another reason behind herd immunity's positives. A booster is currently not recommended for later in life, unless there is travel outside the US.

You having a fat child does not expose me to infections. Vaccinations are not 100% proof against illness and never presented that way. What is known is illness it typically shorter in duration and amount of shedding is lower in vaccinated populations.
