To make some use of this thread, do I have any need for the Barclays card if I already have a Freedom/Sapphire combo?

Only if you are getting the sign-up bonuses. No real need to have both.

I think its a highly debatable topic IMO, as you can see by Bacon's opinion.
I'm wrestling with it myself, as booking things like off chain hotels, award ticket taxes and fees, services like AirBnB, etc. can be covered using Barclay points you have accumulated.
I think if you can accumulate a decent size of Barclay points every year to offset the $89 fee (and you really like the FICO score and TriptIt Pro as well) you could find some value in keeping it.
But it also depends on how you play the game. Do you just move from spending bonus to spending bonus, churn, etc.
