I think it's pretty widely accepted the term "assault rifle or weapon" refers to semi auto rifles that are similar in appearance to military full auto versions. It's an inaccurate description, but that's what people think when you say 'assault rifle". When you say "deer rifle" they think bolt action with a scope.

Assualt Rifles

Why not? It has no meaning. It's like the phrase "common sense gun laws". Common sense is not a bright line demarcation. It has no meaning. I could say that "common sense gun laws" = confiscation of all fire arms, knives and pieces of pipe that could be made into zip guns, shards of tin, etc.

First - I disagree with you completely.
Second - Even if it were generally true, the press seems to go out of its way to get people to conflate semi-automatic with their select fire versions when they do stories and take polls about so-called "assault weapons".
So, even if it were "widely accepted" for a brief period of history, the effort to demonize the term, and therefore the weapons and their law-abiding owners, has nixed all of that.

Interesting...but the group of 18-24 people was just 130 or so folks.
All polls use sample sizes such as this. They usually consist of around 1000 people total in the poll. Margin of error +- 3%.
Unless all of the polled people were from MS, then the overwhelming majority is still quite encouraging.

Blaming video games is a cop out. The statistics do not back up the claim.
I don't think video games are to blame for murders, but let's not pretend that they have no affect on the human mind. Certain types of games, played for certain amounts of time, bring out sociopathic traits. Science.

quote:Unfortunately, I have to disagree. Young people today are at least as dumbed-down as the older generation...if not more.
I like the current trend..it gives me comfort knowing that full tyranny is not in our near future.
It is that ignorance that allows tyranny to flourish.
Example: Young people today (just like young people of every generation before them) are tired of being told what to do and how to live their lives.
So they think the answer is to vote in "the other guy" and things will begin to get better.
What they don't understand is that the "other guy" works for the same boss as the one before him. They're on the same team.
Until a generation fully comprehends this and has a plan to overcome it, nothing will change - just like nothing has changed in the last 100 years.
I just don't see that epiphany from this generation....unfortunately.

The line has been blurred a bit. People use paramilitary style rifles for more than target practice these days.

How ridiculous of it was to demonize/make illegal firearms solely based on cosmetic features in 1994? - (Thank G-d they put in a 10-year sunset provision).
And George W. Bush - absolutely would have signed a bill re-authorizing that same silly law in 2004, had it come to his desk. And he was "conservative" and "pro 2nd Amendment".
I think The Who wrote a song about this over 40 years ago...

You must be referring to fully automatic weapons, I know of no federal currently banning anything called a "assault weapon", state laws such as NY and IL are a different story. The registration process with the ATF and local law enforcement is pretty straight forward in a lot of states. If you have a few hundred bucks, no criminal record, and a cooperative local sheriff you can possess a fully automatic weapon.

Meh. Probably not caliber specific - 6.8 could be an assault rifle. 4.7mm caseless could be an assault rifle, but I'll agree that it needs to be cartidges in this class.

I think, more importantly, it was a cross between a machine pistol/SMG and a rifle - and that was the role - to combine the two - a package that gave you somewhat of the longer range of a rifle, with the rapid reloading/rapid fire of the machine pistol.
quote:
After the German Stormgewehr
Exactly - precisely (okay, actually it is "sturmgeweher", but that's a tough word to spell correctly if you don't do it very often) - it is not often I agree with Tigah in the ATL, but when I do, it is usually emphatic agreement.

Spot on, again.
In any event, the U.S. press either deliberately misleads or doesn't understand this. The U.S. gun control movement either deliberately misleads or doesn't understand this. The Democratic caucus in both houses either deliberately misleads or doesn't understand this. Voters in many, many states do not understand this.
That's the only thing I disagree with you on - the "We all know" part.
Yes, "we all" that are knowledgeable about firearms, but not the collective "We all" not even everyone on the poliboard.

Well, it doesn't mean the Colt 6920 and 6940 models you can get at Wal-Mart.
No select fire feature = not an assault rifle by any reasonable interpretation of the phrase. It is just a semi-automatic rifle with some functional and cosmetic similarites to an actual assault rifle.
Actual assault rifles are subject to NFA restrictions, as are short-barreled rifles and shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices, etc. Plus they are relatively fixed in number - no more can be manufactured and placed into commerce (exchanged between citizens) - although, obviously, the government can continue to contract and procure more for governmental use.
