Never been to one (or a parade in Nola either for that matter), but are they really that fun?

No they suck. Nobody goes. Please avoid at all cost. And don't go to the Endymion Extravaganza either. Snooze fest.
Again, a night at hooters is much better.

There are many varations of what is called a Ball. Most or fun. Then there are the krewe parties and such.
New Orleans krewes are busting at the seems and the balls and parties are full these days. Awesome times.
Do a little of your own research, don't just depend on the half arse ignorant stories from your friends who have never been to any or went to a lame arse shite ball in Hammond.

Some are for all out fun, while some are society events. It depends which Krewe you are speaking of.

I don't care for any type of formal affair, so I am not much on mardi gras balls...

parades, on the other hand, are a hell of a lot of fun if you don't have a problem dealing with drunks and crowds....
