Your temperature set point is lower than what the thermostat is reading. Manually crank it up and I bet the heating element engages.

Make sure none of the wires came loose when you were switching the batteries. A few months back my thermostat shorted out. The compressor would come on with the heat. Basically it was heating the air then passing it over the cold coils. Weird as frick.
