Keen Hiking Shoes..Are they good shoes?

I have trouble finding shoes that fit (Size 13 X Wide) and I found a pair of Keen HybredLife for $107 at Academy.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this brand name or shoe?
Thanks.

I've worn their sandles for years. No problems.

You fat bro. I Keed. I Keed.
Merrell FTW.

Have had several pair of Keen shoes. Mostly casual and sandal type, not hiking boots. I have found them to be comfortable and durable.
Will you be doing day hiking or longer camping/hiking type stuff. What terrain?
For hiking I have only worn Vasque Sundowners for the past 20 years. They should have your size. Never skimp on good boots if you are going to be doing alot of serious hiking...

Keen make quality hiking boots. I would be skeptical of any they sell at Academy though because Academy tends to pick up the lower end models that most brands sell. I would check out REI and try on a bunch. I bought a pair of Oboz from REI for around 100 for trekking in Patagonia and they were fricking awesome and 100% waterproof.

That's a nice suggestion but we do not have an REI in Louisiana. Pack & Paddle in Lafayette has a good selection with a helpful staff and I think they carry Oboz.

I was going to suggest gander mountain but we don't have one of those in Louisiana either. wtf Louisiana? The one in Beaumont has a wide variety of hiking shoes/boots. I bought keens and merrels (sp?) for the family last summer for our trip. Hiked in palo duro, Mesa verde, Moab. Shoes fit will and dried out quickly after stream crossings.

Big Keen fan here, but my sandals have been falling apart a bit. I think Mung has had some issues with his shoes. Mediocre to poor reviews on disc golf forums re: durability.

Keen HybredLife
Hybrid Life is just the line, by the way, not the model. Not excellent quality but good if you have wide feet.

Vasque Sundowners
Back in the day, that's what I used on the AT and up to Alaska. Never skimp on boots.

Sundowners are great. Vasque doesn't tend to fit many people, though. It's better to have some shite Merrells that fit than some Asolos that don't, as an example. It's important to try a lot of them on, preferably at an actual outfitter with staff that knows their stuff.

some shite Merrells

Don't get me wrong. Merrell works for A LOT of people and they fit a lot of people. Merrell is good at what they do and I can't fault them for that. But their QC is outrageously bad. I wouldn't buy a pair without being able to give the exact pair I was going to buy a good look over, for example.

I got some Keen hiking shoes at Massey's in BR. Sole began coming off after a year, with not a ton of use. I put some shoe goo on them and it seems to have resolved the issue. They are certainly comfortable.

quote:Disc golf is VERY hard on shoes. All the usual suspects appear in the reviews. No shoe gets raves. Merrells are about as good as you will see, especially if they have Vibram soles. The twisting on concrete pads is murder on the rubber. My biggest complaint is, the shoe has the word waterproof right on them. Not even close to being water resistant. I think I got a defect. Hence, the NeverWet treatment.

Vibram isn't any better than most rubber these days. Many companies are moving away from Vibram since they have to alter the last after design to fit a Vibram template. Merrell does tend to have a lot problems with their waterproof fabric letting water in. The other thing is that any waterproof shoe will be HOT and a lot of people are sweating into their shoe more than they realize. Most common problem I see with Merrell is severely mis-cut insoles that just don't fit the shoe at all.

That's great, but if you're comparing the Moabs to shoes in a similar price point without a Vibram, of course the Moab will fare better. But there's a reason many higher end boots and shoes are forgoing the Vibram route these days.

It's generally Merrill to Merrill comparisons. Mine with Vibrams show no wear yet at all. My previous POS Hi-Teks wore smooth through the soles in very little time.
