And coming out as gay is a big deal because for a very very long time, coming out as gay was career-destroying for actresses and sports stars. Nowadays everyone has the "who cares" attitude, which is exactly the right way to handle it; it's no big deal, shouldn't be news. But the media still runs with it because it used to be so taboo and it's still an eye-catching headline.

Not really. You are neglecting the whole humans aren't supposed to have sex with members of their same sex deal. There are perverted degenerates who do obviously. But it is not something that should be celebrated.
