ETA..... is it in your attic? May drive the price up slightly but anyone with a little mechanical know how can swap that out. I would say $1,200 is high. He's probably selling the heater for more too. I also think youbhave to have a licensed plumber do your install for the warranty to the effective.

It's in an elevated closet (built just to house water heater) in the garage which is attached to the house. It vents through the attic though. I do think some work on getting that part to current code may be needed, which could explain the higher estimate. I'm going to get several more though.

You are correct. However it's not a difficult job.
