It's the same as trying to lift with foam under your feet. Try deadlifting with 1" foam under your bare feet. You can't plant your feet firmly and you lose a ton of torque.

You can lose your balance. Also when your foot is flat you can bring a little power under you making it easier to lift heavy weights.
