A couple of tablespoons of olive oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium high. Add the asparagus and season with salt and pepper. Cook the asparagus for about 5 minutes, moving around in the skillet.
Add a table spoon of butter and cover for 5 minutes. The water in the butter will soften the asparagus.
Continue pan frying for 5-10 minutes until spotty brown and tips are slightly crisp.
No better way IMO.
