The sum of what I read is that you need a lot of practice to get with a DE razor the closeness that a cartridge gets.

This isn't true at all - my very first DE shave was closer than any cartridge shave I ever had. Of course, being cautious, it probably took me an hour.

You need a lot of practice to approach the time efficiency of a good cartridge - but I shaved with cartridges from about 18 to about 45 - nothing but irritation, stubble and the like. I have a heavy, coarse beard and somewhat sensitive skin. Even with basic, mild DE equipment I get a better shave. Once I find the right balance between aggressiveness and comfort, I will probably be only a little slower than a cartridge, but enjoy the shave more and have it closer.

Intriguing but still scared.

Want to do a barber straight razor shave first to see what I am missing.
