I just have no idea how to parse what the team thinks.
I think signing Ajinca says they feel the need for at least a part time "starter" at center in the short term. Tyreke was seen as a massive talent upgrade over Robin Lopez that you couldn't pass up, and the available replacement options for Lopez were pretty rough. Think about the center market we were dealing with. We paid Stiemsma twice the minimum after getting into a bidding war over a center that hasn't played in forever.

That's disgustingly true.
I know AD is still young and maturing, but I don't think he has the body type to play center for 82 games. He bulked up 15 pounds or so during the offseason, but it looks like during the course of the season so far, he's lost it. Idk, I could be wrong. To me he looks better suited to be a slasher/midrange type player, not a traditional center.

I like Evans. But it is a weird move if they were willing to dump Lopez and they knew they didn't want Davis banging 5s considering the options available.
Maybe they had too much faith in their ability to coax average play out of Smiht and Steimsma. Despite the hysteria here, Oden was always a long term investment.
If I thought Monty had even a touch of basketball iconoclasm, I would say they still intend to put Davis at “center." They just aren't ready yet.
