We've glued clay figures to cardboard before using basic craft glue. (I think we've done clay animals and a model of the state capitol building.)

If the clay is still soft and the cardboard is thick enough (like the kind used in shipping boxes), you can also stick broken toothpicks into the bottom of the clay and the board before you glue it for additional support.

This sounds like a great idea for next time. At this point the clay is pretty solid, so we tried some glue and hopefully he will be careful carrying it around. Thanks for the input.
