It is a kid's project, but he and the wife don't know how to attach the model to cardboard. Well hell if I know, and google wasn't much help. So I decided to use an OT Lifeline.

We've glued clay figures to cardboard before using basic craft glue. (I think we've done clay animals and a model of the state capitol building.)
If the clay is still soft and the cardboard is thick enough (like the kind used in shipping boxes), you can also stick broken toothpicks into the bottom of the clay and the board before you glue it for additional support.
