I have a "cost effective" NV scope for my AR. Not really sure that I would trust it to hold zero on a .308 though...the .223/5.56 is pretty easy on it. I love mine, even though it's not military grade or the clearest optic made. However, for my purposes (nutria, beavers, coyotes, hogs, etc) it's just about perfect.

oh yeah, it's an Armasight OPMOD (Optics Planet Model). 3x or 4x magnification if I remember correctly. it also has an illuminator on it that is crucial to actually seeing things with no ambient light available.

If you plan on throwing the bank at this, go with thermal sights. the functionality of them is seriously awesome, and the "cool" factor is off the charts.

just my $.02

eta: I have a pic of mine somewhere...if I find it I'll try to have KR post it for me so you can see what it looks like.

get a helmet mount setup and a good laser, that way you can use the night vision without pointing your gun at everything.

Thanks for all the input. I think I have settled on the armasight nemesis 6x ID model. going to buy it from optics planet. they have the best prices and are the biggest seller of night vision from armasight. i spoke with a tech buy with armasight and they gave a lot of information and input. they suggested that model because of the amount of usage and cost. living in south Louisiana between fishing and hunting its not like I am going to be able to use it all the time so i think for the price and amount i will get to play with it, thats the best option.

I know if you can get your hands on some mid-90's army ranger stuff, it's pretty badass.

That's the extent of my night vision knowledge.
