when jindal called for a state of emergency (thursday?) doesn't that authorize for federal assistance?

if so, where was that federal assistance with salting the overpasses and roads?

seemed pretty ridiculous to have the interstates shut down on major interstates when just a little bit of planning could have gone a long way.

baton rouge was especially a joke with the unpreparedness

what do you think?

FedGov sent the salt trucks, but the ice had already melted when they got here.

I think it was a good learning experience.

Hopefully we will be more prepared for these situations in the future.

No reason to run to "daddy" every time you make a mistake.

Louisiana is as concerned with preparing for ice storms as Chicago is with preparing for hurricane season.

I thought it allowed them to call in the National Guard and make other moves more hastily within the state.

That's what happens with central planning.

The reason he called for a state of emergency, per WWL, was it allowed for the uninterrupted flow of propane for the state. 70% of the nation's propane comes from LA & TX, there is a shortage of propane due to the weather. We get ours before they price gouge the northern states.

LA times article on the shortage

Reminds me of an incident up here where I live. A couple of years after I moved here the highway dept. had just finished making a two lane highway into a five laner, turn lane in the middle. We get a 17 inch snow. The highway dept. sends their blade trucks to scrape the road. What do they do? Instead of blading the snow to the sides of the road they pile it up in the turn lane, about 3-4 feet high.

You can guess the outcome of that ridiculous move. shite would melt during the day and refreeze at night. Had a whole week of sunny weather after the snow but every morning for about five days we woke up to black ice and most days fender benders were still taking place. The HD must have received some irate calls, mine being one of them, because I haven't seen them pull that stupid move again.

A lot of areas in the south are not equipped to deal with ice/snow on the roads. It does not make much sense economically to buy snow equipment which only gets used once or twice every 5 years.

Historically the bad winter weather in the south only last a day or 2 and quickly disappears. Like another poster mentioned, Chicago does not spend money on hurricane preparedness just like New Orleans does not prepare for winter storm conditions.

This has been an odd winter of freezing in La. You guys in the South are getting snow, ice, bad roads. Up here in Shreveport our temps have been just as bad or worse but the roads have been bone dry...even bridges and overpasses when the temp is in the teens.

Obama is the Sun and he ended the freeze by his magnificent glow.

How often do we get this type of weather that shuts down the interstate? Not often enough to warrant spending money to remedy it.

I had zero issue getting across town TO work, and it was like a 45 minute drive on airline/jefferson home. Not ideal, but not outrageous (I've seen worse on a normal good weather Friday).

I understand there are much larger issues at hand than me getting to and from work, but for one or two days every half decade, it doesn't make sense to spend the money.

I think the assistance is more financial reimbursement than it is logistical help.

Just have someone rent 5 salt trucks and we wouldn't have to cancel everything

Not how this works. Jindal declared a State of Emergency for the State of Louisiana. It provides State assistance (National Guard, LADOT, etc.) to local municipalities. It is only when those resources are overwhelmed that the Governor can request Federal Assistance (money and resources) via a request for a Presidentially Declared Disaster. Jindal didnt do that last week, and he has yet to do it this week.

Even if he does, the Feds dont just send down the "Federal Icing Squadron"...it just allows the state to spend as much as they need to do it effectively themselves and the state gets reiumbursed for it.

I5 was shutdown north of Eugene, Oregon a couple of months ago.

I was in Denver a couple of winters ago and I70 was shutdown in parts of CO and KS. I was stuck as I drove from Nola.

All 3 states have snowplows yet they shut it down. shite happens and sometimes you just have to roll with it. LA doesn't deal with these types of conditions all that often so I'm not sure why you're surprised at the situation.
