An Erath woman has entered a guilty plea in federal court after stealing approximately $30,222 from Walk-On's Bistreaux and Bar in Lafayette.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, 24-year-old Hue Bui admitted to one count of wire fraud.
Investigators say from February 2012 to August 2012, Bui stole from the company by using a scheme that involved $25 prepaid American Express, VISA, and Master Card gift cards that she bought herself. During her shift, she would create a fake food or beverage order costing approximately $25, pay for the fake order with the gift card, write in a gratuity amount on the bill, and collect the tips at the end of her shift. When the credit card companies realized the $25 limit was exceeded, they charged the transactions back to Walk-On's.
Bui faces 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, restitution, and three years of supervised release for the count of wire fraud. A sentencing date of May 16, 2014 was set.

So unless the tip was more than $25 she lost money? Or am I missing something?

That's crazy. She's waited on me before at Walk-Ons and also dated one of my friends.

That's what I'm kinda questioning too...she'd have to get >$25 per "check" to make money...how the restaurant didn't find it odd that she was getting tipped more than the food cost (several times obviously) is beyond me. The article is a bit vague..if I find another one that's more clear I'll post it

There can't be THAT many Hue Bui's in the beautiful city of Erath.

Crime: stealing $30,222
Possible sentence: 20 years in prison plus $250,000 fine & restitution
Cost to house prisoner in LA: $17,486 per year (probably the lowest in the US)
Potential public cost: $349,720 plus cost to prosecute
This is what's wrong with America.
How about one year in prison plus restitution (if it's a first offense), so there is a chance it will be paid back? If she's given even half the potential sentence and fine, it will never be repaid and she'll never be a productive member of society.
Edit: Whoops, this is a federal case, so the numbers are different, but the principle is the same. Let's see, 10 years ago it cost $25,327 per year for a federal inmate, so that number will certainly be higher now.

I wouldn't think she goes to prison. Prob probation and restitution.
