How long will SMU allow June Jones to steal $2 million (base!) a year?

It's an open dirty secret here in Dallas that June Jones given not one frick about SMU football ever since he tried to run off to Arizona State.
Countless Texas HS coaches will tell you that June never shows up on campus and never calls any of their kids. Even players who want to go to SMU never get calls and actually have to sell themselves by sending June videos.
This doesn't just pertain to schools outside of DFW either. Local 5A Division II Cedar Hill just won the state title. How many times has June been on that campus in the 6 years he has been HC at SMU? ONCE.
Here is how SMU has recruited CH players like WR 4 star DeMarkus Lodge this season.

This is a normal thing. The word given by people who have talked to SMU AD is June says it takes too much energy to recruit 3 stars and up b/c they probably wont land them. WTF? How can you EVER land a kid if you don't even talk to him and build a relationship?
Somehow June has some pretty strong defenders at SMU even though it's blatant he is just cashing it in as a lame duck coach. There was a Tim Cowlishaw article in the Dallas Morning News that seemed like a planted puff piece to help June with his contract extension. The ever observant Timmy believes that June is the Tony Romo of SMU football somehow not getting the respect he deserves for leading a pile of poo to a better than it really is record. He reasons that since SMU was so god awful before, it must mean that June is a miracle worker to get them to 4 bowls in a row.
Of course Tim ignores that SMU was openly hostile to football for nearly 20 years after the death penalty and only recently began to relax standards with athletes. He also conventionality forgets SMU actually had started to turn things around under Mike Cavan before regressing somewhat under Phil Bennett and neither of those guys got anywhere near the same support for the school that June gets. Hell, June's $2 million salary alone would have paid for most of Cavan's staff. Also, never mind how there are 35 bowls now and that a 6-6 2012 SMU team would have been left out of a bowl had they been in the 2006 6-6 or 1997 6-5 SMU's shoes.
How long will June be able to keep people from looking behind the curtain and seeing a fat tired old man who just doesn't care anymore?

quote:
It’s not often SMU sends out offers to Cedar Hill players despite the fact that the Longhorns constantly produce some of the top talent in the metroplex. Oklahoma pledge Marcus Green was even quoted saying that quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison told him ‘he didn’t even know he was recruiting Cedar Hill.’
And it’s clear the Mustangs are late to the game with Lodge. So do they still have a chance?
“I didn’t even know SMU had offered me until my dad told me. If he wouldn’t have told me, I wouldn’t have even known,” Lodge said. “I haven’t talked to any of their coaches so it was a surprise to me."

I'm not plugged into SMU at all but last year it was not exactly a secret that the boosters went to war about Jones. Some don't think they can do better but at $2m annually, they definitely could imo.
The concern seems to be if they went and hired an up and comer like Chad Morris that he'd bolt for a bigger gig in a few years. With Jones, he's probably done with that. I don't get that thought process, especially since Jones took the ASU job last year, but that seems to be where they are. They want their own Gary Patterson who will stay for 10-15 years.

That whole ASU thing was weird. They buyout was the given reason it didn't work out, but I think fan backlash is why ASU didn't try to overcome that hurdle.
I think June is not a bad coach. He has gotten more out of GG than any coach since high school. But you are correct his recruiting stinks- only one three star in the current class.

SMU is big money school. If I was a two star athlete that knew I wasn't pro football caliber, I'd seriously consider the school. Great education.
