Why all the commercial celebrity voice overs when the celebrity isn't revealed?

They never reveal the celebrity and most people never even notice.

Currently there are voice overs by:

John Hamm
Matt Damon
Michael C. Hall
Martin Sheen
John Krasinski

I'm probably missing some. These are the ones I've picked up on.

I don't get it.

How do you know who they are if they don't reveal their identity?

Everyone knows Jim Halpert does those insurance commercials. That's why they get a celebrity. Why would they need to reveal him?

Kinda sucks for the professional voiceover artists who do this for a living, getting squeezed out by a celebrity.

For everything else, there's Mastercard. Billy Crudup. Was getting $15,000 a pop back in '02. Probably more now.

Donald Sutherland for OJ commercials

ETA: Gene Hackman used to do the Lowes commercials and Chris Parnell (SNL) does Hotels.com.

Jason Sudeikis does some as well.

They've got to be cheaper than having the actress come in studio. You still get voice and name recognition for less money. And people skip commercials anyway.

It costs them less to just pay for voice work, and the familiarity of the voice is received by customers even if they don't automatically realize who it is.

Not a new fad by any means. Hackman did united way back when and chuck Heston did bud.
