Who uses Melatonin?

I know several of you do, as I've seen it suggested for use here before.
I've been using a product for the last 3 months that contains in a serving 5mg of melatonin and 3mg total of GABA and Valerian Root.
My questions are, I've seen a few articles saying that melatonin triggers cortisol? Does anyone know this to be true or have you experienced weight gain while using it?
I've also read you only need to use 1mg, 90 minutes before bed. And that you shouldn't need to use it longer than 2 weeks or else your sleep issues may have some other root other than your body not producing enough melatonin.
How much, when, how long have you all been using it?
Not sure if age/size matters for use?

I take about 10mg a night for over a year and no weight gain.

never experienced weight gain and I've taken it for years. it's a natural hormone for sleep.

Read the online mayo clinic and webMD articles about it. It's more often recommended for temporary sleep problems (e.g., working weird hours).
If you're using it, 3mg or higher is not recommended.
Most Dr's recommend relaxation techniques or if reading helps you sleep, etc..
My problem is waking up in the middle of the night and failing to go back to sleep. I tried melatonin and it did no good there.

I've been using it for years...it works like a charm in helping me fall asleep. It hasn't led to any weight loss or gain. I'm 6'2, 185, 8"

I'm not sure on the mg, but I took a half one night and I had to use a crowbar to pry myself out of bed the next morning. If I'm having trouble sleeping now, I'll nibble on a melatonin tablet. One tablet lasts me like 20 times.

I take it on and off.. I've only ever used the 500 mcg or 1 mg dosages. Never more than that.
I've never experienced any side effects.

I've taken it before, not in a while, though. It did help me fall asleep, although I'd only sleep about 5 hours, then wake up feeling kind of out of it for a while. And it wasn't foolproof. If I was really wired about something, or stressed out, it didn't work. YMMV.

What are these articles you speak of? Reputable medical sites?
My dr recommended me melatonin & I don't think he would have if that were the case
Unfortunately it does absolutely nothing for me

I had terrible sleep problems for years. Started taking melatonin in mid-'97. I take 3 mg or less nightly about 45 mins before I want to go to sleep.
It feels like the sandman comes like when I was a kid. I usually read until I get drowsy then put down whatever I'm reading and go right to sleep.
I get up once to piss during the night (usually) and go right back to sleep. I sleep 6-7 hours usually. When I wake up it's like it was when I was a kid. I am drowsy for a few minutes and by the time my feet hit the floor I am fully functional.
I found out very quickly that if I took more than 3 mg that it worked quite the opposite. One mg works just as well as 3 mg.
The dreams are pretty awesome too. I hardly ever remembered my dreams before I started taking it.

I switch shifts every couple months and use Neuro Sleep when I do.
It contains Melatonin and it is absolutely amazing. It knocks me out completely, get a great night rest.
I am not sure about the cortisol thing though.

10mgs of the grape chewables every night. Takes ab 45 min to take effect. I'm ab 15lbs overweight but not due to melatonin.
