That's a fairly easy method and a good start.
I still use it periodically to hit minimum spends.

It offers you the ability to hit $5k spend a month. If you have a Chase Ink card, Staples $200 gift cards are worth considering.

Visa Buxx. Google 'Visa Buxx Flyertalk'. That is another option for MS. If you have questions after reading through that, ask away. It's fairly straight forward.
