Actors famous for one role.....

and the actor is just as well known despite it just being the one role. They have become so attached to that role they are basically perceived as one.
Norman Reedus/Daryl - The Walking Dead
Jason David Frank/Tommy Oliver - Power Rangers
Will Wheaton - Wesley Crusher
Other than not landing other major roles what else defines it? What explains their universal popularity in the respective fanbase?
I think being the first incarnation of a character as well. With the Walking Dead, any character in the GN gets compared to the show counterpart constantly. With Daryl (and to an extent Merle) being completely show originals that no one can say "Daryl sucks he was better in the GN" like they did with say Andrea.
I think fan interaction has something to do with it. All of these actors embraced the silliness of their role/fandom and use it as self love. Its no coincidence that they also hit the convention circuit hard.
Anyone else?

Um...Boondock Saints ring a bell? He's pretty well known for that too.
Adrian Brody in The Pianist. Because, what has he done since?

Hmmm, honestly, I don't know these guys at all.

I always think Boondock Saints first for him.

I always think Stand By Me for him. I did love me some ST:tNG though.

I bet most people under 30 only know him from big bang theory.

He had the lead in the King Kong movie with Jack Black. Also had the lead in the last AvP movie.

Mark Hamill
He will forever be Luke Skywalker, but he is a very accomplished voice actor who's most famous role is the Joker on various Batman series and games.
It just isn't an animated Batman show/game without Hamill as the joker or Kevin Conroy as Batman.
I guess it depends on how you view the question. Is the actor famous for their body of work, do they have one defining role, or were they simply a one hot wonder.

When I see Rainn Wilson I think Dwight from the office. So when I watched "Super" he was totally believable to me in that role because I could picture Dwight going out and doing something like that.

Many, if not most, TV stars are only known for their one big role.

this post is full of fail. First, as mentioned, Reedus in Boondock and then Will Wheaton was in a little flick called Stand By Me

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but Malcolm McDowell as Alex DeLarge

Leonard Nimoy - Spock
but NOT William Shatner - Captain Kirk, because Shatner is so much more than just Kirk.

Can't think of Ernie Hudson as being anyone but Winston from Ghostbusters.
