May just be me, but I'm not greatly impressed with Charlie Strong. Was above average at Louisville. Beat some overrated Florida and Miami teams. Those are his claim to fame.

I don't think Strong was a step up from Mack Brown.

Guess we will see in a few years.

Yeah, only getting to a Sugar Bowl at Louisville was above average. That "overrated" Florida unit beat LSU, FWIW.

Mack was good, but his time needed to be up.

Keep in mind, CS was a great coach/recruiter at Florida too (so at least he's been a part of a big-name program). I think it'd be interesting to see if he mixes both Texas and Florida talent there for his recruiting (his staff recruited Florida pretty well). It all depends on how he puts together his staff, obviously. I think he'll do fine.

The "overrated" Florida team beat LSU, Johnny Football, and went to a BCS bowl

the thing is that mack had gotten stale. his recruiting policies were outdated and he just didn't go back to the "basics" which is what he did to build the tejas program. he would sit in his office and "select" his recruits. his famous line went something like this...."we know who we want and they will have their chance, if they select to go to the greatest college on earth there will be a place for them but they'd better select early or we'll just go and select someone else".

the hell of it is that it worked for a little while and then his competitors just chipped away and chipped away and outworked him. i also feel he and his staff were not good talent evaluators; they probably overrelied on the damn recruiting services. lastly i think he surrounded himself with sycophants and let the program run itself while he smoozed and playcated the longhorn channel.

charlie strong will bring new energy and new blood into a program that has a close proximity to one hell of a lot of great high school talent. my understanding is that he is a very good recruiter and i think he is a good coach. and it's not like the cupboard is bare, he just needs a damn quarterback. also, his assts have to be better than mack had.
