For comparison, what is roughly the going price of an ounce when purchased illegally? I just found it strange that the article compared the price to that of medical marijuana, rather than the price of obtaining it illegally. Anyone happen to know how these compare?

It depends. How much do you need?

$125 can get you an oz in CO.

$200 can get you an oz in LA (if you know who to call).

Street values in most states range from $50-$60 for an eighth (1/8 of an oz),putting the street value at $400-$480 for an oz.

medical marijuana,

My understanding is that medical and recreational are taxed differently and have different possession laws.

A decade ago, $300 was a decent price, but $350-$400 was not uncommon. $250 was about the bottom $ on an ounce. Factor in inflation and $400 an ounce today isn't that ridiculous.
