"Take the Time Travel Worm Hole forward from the 70's to present. What's changed? Good, but not great."
What's changed: In 1974 we were 16 years removed from playing for a national championship.
We're currently two years removed from our last title game, 2nd time in 5 years. CMac never came close.

Wasn't that 69-70; yes, I was actually at that one 69 game as a youngster we won 15-9 I think. Of course I started in 74, that when some of lean years started! Recall Mac just couldn't keep up with some of evolving offense schemes and D was pretty good not great and of course Gumps as pointed out!

By the standards some throw out, Nick wouldn't be a great coach either in comparison to The Bear.
Mac had some great teams and he was a pretty fair coach for his time.
I will never understand the need some have to tear down one coach in order to pump up another.

I liked Mac. He loved LSU.
But I think in the mid-70's, the game began to pass him by and he didn't adapt. Recruiting and offense became stale.
Then there is the matter of not getting real support from the school in terms of money.
Then there was Bama. Nuff said. One thing forgotten. How many Bear assistants became winning head coaches. That is the kind of staff Mac faced every year.

Yeah - I messed that up. It's fixed, now.
We beat them 20-15 in 1969 and 14-9 in 1970.

That darn USC loss 79 really ate away at Mac and I think haunted him to his death bed; should have won that thing! Had graduated that summer and just missed it as a student but remember well on the radio call could barely hear JF with the call!

Folks don't remember how good a coach Johnny Vaught was at Ole Miss: Bryant (at UK and UA) had a 7-6-1 record against Vaught's UM squads. Cholly Mac was 8-9-1 versus the Rebs while at LSU, dropping his last four chances in a row (76-79) against mediocre Vaught-less Rebel squads.

From what I remember the wishbone was the "in" offense at that time. The veer was sort of a hybrid between the wishbone and pro style.
It did not seem to work very well. However, it seems to have been the pre cursor to the option type offensives that are very successful in todays college game.

Mac was a great defense coach, head coach not so much.

Yeah, for sure that put a dagger in my young 13 YO arse! Would have probably played UT for the MNC @ Cotton B if not the 3pt loss to Arch?

That can't be right. LSU beat Ole Miss five years in a row (1976-80). By my count, Mac was 9-8-1 vs. Ole Miss.

Vaught retired after 1970, then came back for one year in 1973.

Yes, I think the next year as we beat him so badly with the cast on that late season national telecast brought some closure and actually felt sorry for him (NOT) and of course with NOSaint's the year after that the love/hate relationship with Arch continued! Felt he always gave his all with them just couldn't get a complete team around!

Was in school back then. We didnt have the talent in the mid 70s verses the late 60s. I dont think Mac was the recruiter he needed to be. Very disappointing football years! my first road game we got killed at bama 30-0

1609 tiger That was the 1974 game at Legion Field when Tony Nathan killesd us. i was there too.
