I'll just add to my post above, coming from an engineering degree background, the Intelligent Investor made my head hurt. It is basically a text book. Very informative text, though I spent countless hours working through the first few chapters with a dictionary and Google on stand by.
I would personally recommend reading A Random Walk Down Wall Street before jumping into the Intelligent Investor. I own both books and I have yet to complete the Intelligent Investor, although the former I completed in a matter of a few weeks. I read in the evenings after work and I still open it on the occasion for reference.

Even if you don't know a thing about the stock market, an initial read of it will give you a good understanding of how the system works. Then on your second read you can pickup the detailed nuances you missed on the first go-around.
Atleast that's how I did it.
