Ok, I see nobody is going to help me. But, I think I know what's happening now.
The shell is cut around the wad so the whole thing shoots out like a big, shot-filled, plastic slug?

Yep, so did I. We called them "ringed" shells.

Here's the thing to do...If nothing else, just for grins.
1. Empty the lead shot from the shell
2. Melt down some candle wax and mix in the shot with it
3. While still melted down, pour the wax/shot mixture back into the shell
4. Let the wax harden
5. Load into any double barrel and put bigass holes in anything you shoot
Me and a buddy did this and went to town on an old IBM CPU housing. Quite fun indeed.

Had some a-hole use one on an otter once. Will never hunt with that jerk again.

That sucks. Otters are cool little animals.

I actually know someone who shot a duck with one. It exploded to say the least..

you can do it without the wax system mention.
with a sharp knife, cut around the hull but about 1/2" about the brass. you want the wad to stay with the bottom (brass) part and the top to spin freely. the wad the is what is holding the 2 parts together. place in chamber carefully, obviously if you hold the shell brass up, the top half with the shot will slide off. aim, shoot, pray. :)

We used to use them to shot at flocks of geese/ducks far away to scare them up sometimes.
My dad said he used to kill deer with them when they would run out of buckshot back in the days 40-50 years ago.
