Spoilers... And really not trying to be an a-hole just my honest opinion.

I was pretty excited to watch this and even convinced my friends to give it a shot with me.... Huge mistake. It was bad IMO. No depth to the story other than "the war against God" which was only sprinkled in once or twice. There was no backstory to the killings or anything that would explain the mazes in the book relating to the kidnappings. Obviously I hated it and was embarrassed for suggesting it.

SPOILERS

The war against God was contrived on the base that the family was originally overly religious. Son died of cancer, family turned into "demons" because of their grief and in their devout faith could not find reasoning for their tragedy. Thus, the kidnapping and killing in their attempts to turn more people into them in their war.

The maze was explained to be impossible. In the scene which Joy was found it showed the woman giving the children the finish the maze and you can go home bit. The maze was unsolvable, therefore was just feeding the children false hope. If you want to nitpick, it's not explained why they felt the need to torture the children/keep them alive rather than just kill them and dump them from the get go.

The imposter who escaped obviously remembered all that and obsessed over it due to his mental instability.

The snakes seemed like they may have provided some of the poison. But also since they believed themselves to be demons, it would make sense to identify and use the original representation of evil in the Christianity creation story.

I enjoyed the movie. As someone else put, it was fricking intense. A lot of the clues to the plot were sprinkled in throughout. But I never was able to think outside of the current scenes due to the high amounts of what-the-fricking-fricks.
