best caliber for deer is a 308?

Are you sure you know what a .308 is?

I ask this in all seriousness since you recommended a .30-06

Yea Teddy. A .308 Winchester round is just a shortened 30-06 to have a shorter action on bolt rifles.

30-06 = 7.62x63mm
.308 = 7.62x51mm

Look on the the shelf to see what caliber rounds are the most prevelant. Get something in kne of those calibers. I just bought my son a Savage Axis with an entry level Bushnell Scope walk out the door for $356. Very nice rifle. Only problem is finding .243 ammo. I had to order it online.

Ah, I was thinking 338. Been working physics problems all day and my brain is fried.

Carry on.
