Are sports a big part of the culture in these countries? If so, they may be totally different types of sports. I would also imagine that the political atmosphere of the area effects that. I'm totally ignorant to that part of the world but I would imagine that if they had the resources to recruit the best athletes from such a large pool they could be competitive in whichever sport they concentrated on

i know that basketball is huge in china and india likes soccer enough where they should be able to put out a competitive team
