Yes, it was a stupid joke, I got it, and responded with another stupid joke.

Respect? Again, I don't think you need to gain respect on this board, I was just making some suggestions that might improve the post quality on the board. People trying to develop a persona, or gain respect, is what makes it a crappy place to post in the first place. I know that most posters don't care, just figured I would point it out since someone gave me an opportunity.

I also know that being a dick on this board is how some people find joy in life. I don't want to take that away from anyone. I would maybe only suggest exploring other boards (ie the SEC rant) with this kind of behavior so that this one can be a little less cluttered with nonsense.

I fail to see how this is any different from the Marcus situatio

And this is where I think we're disagreeing. Maybe you aren't being as negative as I'm picking up, but I don't see this as anything close to Marcus Thornton.

Marcus Thornton was

1) Local
2) Was unique on the roster in his skillset as a competent wing scorer and was something that had been on most fans wish lists for years.
3) Was a scorer in a league where fans value offense more than defense.
4) There were enough holes on the roster that the argument wasn't just that he should get more minutes, but that he should be starting.
5) The media cared about Marcus Thornton getting minutes.

Rivers is at best 4th on the guard depth chart, not 2nd. The things he is best at currently are defense and ball protection. I will give him play creation too, but 2 of the 3 things he currently does well don't get most fans excited.

quote:

people just want them some more AR.

Do most people want Rivers more than Roberts? I think they do. Are they willing to "get ugly" over who gets the 5th guard minutes? I think you may have taken a concept most could agree on, Rivers should get more time, and Alejandroed it with over the top inflammatory rhetoric. That may not have been the direction you were trying to go, but I think that's what happened here.

Dude, come on. I am a huge Pelicans fan, but at the end of the day realize it is a bunch of people on the internet blabbering about grown men playing a game. No matter what you say on here it isn't going to have an effect on the team's play.

re: It's About to Get Ugly...

After 4 DNP-CDs, Rivers has played 12, 15, 14, 7, and 11 minutes the last 5 games.

Given that he is at best the 5th guard behind Holiday, Gordon, Evans, and Morrow this isn't an unusual amount of playing time.

Monty corrected two of his biggest weaknesses- he adjusted mid game and he made a smart rotation choice!!!- and it's still not good enough.

If you want this to be about Thornton, I'm checking out. Thornton just had back to back DNP-CDs in Sacramento. Maybe Monty texted his boy Mike Malone and told him to sit Marcus for old time's sake?

See, where we differ is you are thinking about this logically from the viewpoint of someone who follows the Pelicans almost religiously, as most of us do on this board.

From an emotional standpoint, Rivers brings a spark and energy to the court in a very similar, yet different way than Marcus. People want to see guys that are going to maul the attacker on fast breaks. People want to see ball movement and our best players taking shots. Roberts overdribbles...alot. He is a poor defender and just takes general flow/excitement out of the game. Rivers is constantly hustling and consistently trying to find our best 2 players on the court (Davis/Anderson).

It's just a very different energy and it's palpable. It's the same lift Marcus used to give by coming into the game and energizing the crowd by playing hard.

Rivers got stuck on an island twice on fast breaks last night: 1st: a block/almost steal 2nd: meet the offensive player at the rim and maul them, making Jefferson go to the line without any shot at an and 1. There's not another guard on our team that makes those 2 plays in that fashion.

Burke made Roberts look BAD last night. Rivers vs. Burke in the 2nd half was basketball entertainment. Burke actually had to work for his shots, and it's nice to see at least 1 of our guards playing the bulldog defense we thought we'd see from almost all of our guards. You don't even have to know anything about basketball to see he's playing hard. That's part of his endearment to the fans.

14 - Getting spanked by Lakers on the road.
7 - Blowout garbage time from us being up 30+
11 - Roberts had to get abused by a rookie in his 1st NBA game for Rivers to see the floor

I don't think we are in disagreement here...

Admittedly, my post was off topic, and I dont expect anyone to care, I just wanted to point something out since the opportunity presented itself.

I think you could argue that Thornton got cheered almost as loudly and regularly as CP3. Is it really that similar? Unfortunately my schedule has meant catching most games on the radio and the crowd noise doesn't come across well.

I think you might be the only person to feel this way on here. Frankly, I think you bring it onto yourself. With the access and knowledge you bring to this board, you could easily be the best poster on here if you dropped the wall and became "one of the guys" so to say. Don't mean for this to be an attack, just my view on you. It's obvious you know what you're talking about, sometimes lacking on how to say it.

Maybe on the OT but I don't find this particular board to have this at all. There are guys that like to joke around, sure. There are also guys that call out guys like LVB for posting nothing but negative things. All in all, the reason I mostly visit PT is because it's one of the only boards you can have decent discussions on, due in large part to the seemingly small crowd we have.

I also know that being a dick on this board is how some people find joy in life.

Again, I think of LVB when I hear something like this. Definitely not the norm.

It's building game by game. That's why I said it's about to get ugly. It's not there yet. But it was a very lethargic game last night until AR came in. No one was playing with energy and we blew another lead to fall behind in the 2nd half.

Sorry for helping steer this thread in a negative direction. I come to PT largely because I'll get information and ideas I wouldn't otherwise be exposed to.

re: It's About to Get Ugly...

Roberts over the last 5 games:

11, 10, 8, 19, 10.

Rivers has 59 minutes the last 5, Roberts has 58.

Both guys have deep flaws and neither deserve more than 15 mpg given their limitations and the other talent on the roster. Roberts has played well at times this season, but Rivers is getting a fair shot to stake a claim on the backup pg slot (whatever that means on this team). Shit, he played almost an entire quarter in the 2nd half of a tight game.

I know it's frustrating to lose and many are tired of Monty, but I don't see the issue here. If Rivers gets a string of DNP-CDs in favor of Roberts, I'm with you.

re: It's About to Get Ugly...

Glad to see everyone is hugging it out today.
ETA: yes I am being serious, I really like reading some of the discussions on here. Because it's a smaller board. Everyone here kind of meshes and to me it's fun to just kind of read along.
Sorry if it sounds stupid, I haven't slept because of school bs. You all know how it is.

Roberts is a pretty crummy defender, but he's still rated out better than Rivers in DRtg and DWS last year and through the early part of this year.

After watching Rivers for a while, I have trained myself to have zero expectations for him.

If he contributes anything at all to the team, I'm thrilled.

It's a good place to be. I like it.

Of course, there are some dicks on the board, but they're fairly obvious and can be ignored, imo. Frankly, I really don't think this place is any more "off putting" than Saints Talk or any other board for that matter.

There are some pretty knowledgeable posters on this site, and I actually pick up some great info that I wouldn't ordinarily have. I damn sure am too lazy or don't have the time to do some of the online reading that some of the posters do. I respect there interest and participation. And the more people that participate on the board the better it will be in the long run.

As far as Rivers goes, I'v always liked the kid and would love to see him get more opportunities. I think we're going to see more of him, actually.
