Is the sound that much improved that it warrants using these over an mp3?
It depends on the encoding rate of the mp3 but in general yes, there's a pretty big improvement in quality. If you encode your mp3's at 256k or higher, then it's not too bad especially if you use a good encoder like lame. Lower bitrates introduce substantial artifacts.
