Let's take a step back on the detective telling people to "back off" or this "will end badly for you." One, the only evidence that this statement was made comes second hand from a statement by the victim's family that was allegedly made to their attorney. Two, the article doesn't say the detective said "back off" or that he said this "will" end badly. Everyone is reading that into the selective quotes. He, allegedly said...

quote:

A Tallahassee detective told an accuser's attorney that Tallahassee is a "big football town" and her client's life could "be made miserable" if she pursued a sexual assault case against Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, according to an exclusive statement released by the family

Both are true statements. Imagine how this poor young lady could be treated if people knew her name. Without context, those selective quotes sounds look he had a bad motive.

Using the selective quotes, what if he was simply counseling the family's attorney to prepare for the road ahead: "Ma'am, we are moving forward with this investigation, but 'Tallahassee is a big football town.' Your client might 'be made miserable' by irrational fans and fellow students. You should take precautions in the event your client's name is found out."

Yea I agree with a lot of that. But, regardless of how he said it, he influenced the young ladys decision. Hes not a lawyer. Hes a detective. A detectives is : A person, usually a member of a police force, who investigates crimes and obtains evidence or information.

A detective should not be an influence on someones decision to pursue or not to pursue legal action. Thats is a lawyers job.

And not only that, but the detective flat out didnt do his job and the main thing was he didnt pass this up to his superiors.

Yea it would suck. I agree. But that almost suggests that its ok for big time stars in cities to break the law and not have to face the consequences. I mean who wants to be the person that gets the best player on any sports team or the star in a city in trouble? Everyone loves that person, so I guess that person has free reign to do whatever that person wants to and not have to face any consequences?

What would have a bigger affect on a person? Being disliked in a city or being raped, assaulted, beaten, robbed, etc. And im not talking about Winston in this situation, Im talking about any celebrity, star, politician, etc. Those people think they are above the law because they have the support of their city or whatever. And thats just flat out not true. If someone was raped, assaulted, beaten, robbed, etc. by a big star or celebrity, they shouldnt be afraid to come forward with it due to the threat of being hated by everyone there. And if that person is found guilty and that city still hates the person, then that city is just extremely screwed up. If that person was indeed found guilty, its not the victim that did anything wrong.

According to the family statement, that is exactly what he said.

quote:

"When the attorney contacted Detective Angulo immediately after Winston was identified, Detective Angulo told the attorney that Tallahassee was a big football town and the victim needs to think long and hard before proceeding against him because she will be raked over the coals and her life will be made miserable."

And that's not second hand because the statement was released through the attorney that the detective allegedly made those comments to.
